Genetically Modified Crops in India

Genetically Modification is a technology that involves inserting DNA into genome of an organism. To Produce a GM Plant, new DNA is transferred into plants cells, giving it new or different characteristics. This could include changing the way the plant grows or making it resistant to a particular disease. The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (Top Biotech Regular in India) has recently approved for further trials of genetically modified Mustard which has been developed by Delhi University. India is yet yet to approve commercial Cultivation of a GM food crop. The only genetically modified cash crop under commercial cultivation in India is Cotton. Gwadar Port and its strategic importance

Gwadar Port is a warm-water, deep-sea port situated on the Arabian Sea at Gwadar in Baluchistan province of Pakistan. It is located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf just outside the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. It features as the southern Pakistan hub if the $57 billion China-Pakistan economic Corridor plans. It is considered as a vital link between the Chinese One Belt, One3 Road initiative and the Maritime Silk road Project. ·          Pakistan has leased the operations of its strategic Gwadar port to a State-run Chinese firm, the China Overseas Port Holding company (COPHC) for a period of 40 years. ·          COPHC is slated to carry out all the developmental work on the port situated in the Balochistan province of Pakistan. ·          COPHC took over the operations of the port in 2013.     Cauvery Water dispute Delivering its verdict on the longstanding Cauvery Water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu the Supreme court ruled that Karnataka would have to release 177.25 thousand million cubic feet of water ot Tamil Nadu as against and earlier quantum of 192 thousand million cubic feet(tmcft) ·          The court also allocated an additional 4.75 tmcft to Bengaluru to meet the drinking water and domestic requirements of the global city. Thus Karnataka wil now receive 284.75 tmcft as against the 270 tmcft it gets at present. ·          The states of Kerala and Puducherry would continue to receive 30 tmcft and 7tmcft respectively. ·          Tamil Nadu receives 414.25 tmcft of water annually which include 10 tmcft an account of availability of groundwater. ·          The new water sharing scheme will be applicable for the next 15 years. ·          The central government has been directed to constitute the Cauvery Water Management board within

Swaraj Party(1923): Gandhi’s decision to call off the agitation caused frustration amoang masses. His decision came in for server criticism form his colleagues like Motilal Nehru, C.R.   Das and N.C Kelkar, who organized the Swaraj Party. The foundations of the Swaraj Party were laid on Jan. 1, 1923, as the Congress Khilafat Swaraj   Party. It proposed then and alternative programme of diverting the movement form widespread civil disobedience programme to restrictive one which would encourage its member to enter into legislative councils (established under Mont-ford Reforms of 1919) by contesting elections in order ot wreck the legislature form within and to use moral pressure to compel the authority to concede to the popular demand for self-government. Rowlatt Act(1919)   During the viceroyalty of Lord Chelmsford, a sedition committee was appointed by the government in 1918 with Justice Rowlatt which made certain recommendations of curb seditious activities in India. The Rowlatt Act 1919 gave unbridled powers to the government to arrest and imprisons suspects, without trial. The act caused a wave of anger among the people. Even before the3 act was passed, popular agitation began against it Gandhi ji decided to fight against this act and he gave a call for Satyagraha on April 6, 1919. He3 was arrested on April 8, 1919; this led to further intensification of the agitation in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Punjab.
